Ethics First

We think tools that help people make decisions should be transparent about how they work, honest about what they can't do, and clear about where they stand. These are the principles SmartPlay is built on.

Our principles

Open source by default

Our prediction model, feature engineering, and training data are publicly available. Anyone can inspect how SmartPlay works, reproduce our results, and verify our claims. We believe transparency is the only way to earn trust in a space full of black-box predictions.

Credit where it’s due

SmartPlay is built on the work of researchers and open-source contributors who chose to share freely. We name every project and person whose work we build on, link to their repositories, and describe exactly how their contributions shaped ours. If we use your work, you’ll know about it.

Honest about limitations

We publish our model’s accuracy metrics, compare ourselves against other approaches using the same test sets, and openly acknowledge what the model can’t do. We don’t cherry-pick results or hide bad gameweeks. If the model is wrong, you can see it in the numbers.

Your data stays yours

We do not collect, store, or sell any personal data. SmartPlay does not track you across the web, does not build advertising profiles, and does not share anything with third parties. Our business model will never depend on monetising user data.

Our position on gambling

SmartPlay has zero tolerance for gambling. No exceptions.

We do not use, and will never use, any data from bookmakers, betting exchanges, odds providers, or any gambling-adjacent source. Every prediction SmartPlay makes is built entirely on publicly available data from the Fantasy Premier League API and Understat.

We will never collaborate with, accept money from, accept sponsorship from, provide data to, license technology to, or enter into any form of partnership or agreement with any gambling company, bookmaker, betting exchange, or any entity that profits from real-money wagering on sport. Regardless of the amount offered, regardless of the terms, regardless of the framing. This applies to direct and indirect relationships. There are no circumstances under which this changes.

We will never add features designed to assist with sports betting. We will never provide predictions in a format optimised for betting markets. We will never allow our models to be integrated into gambling products. If we discover our work is being used to facilitate gambling, we will take action to prevent it.

Fantasy Premier League is a free game that millions of people play for fun. SmartPlay exists to help people enjoy it. It is not, and will never be, a tool for real-money wagering. If you are looking for a product to gain an edge in sports betting, look elsewhere.
